We started in Petersburg, Alaska. My buddy runs his gill net boat out of there w/his family. They have to go back down early to start school. They had a great year. The sockeye runs, both down here and up there, have been the best in decades.

Porsche 356 Build: Part 5

Continued From: Part 4...

Continued From: Part 4

Serious Progress!

An in process shot of installing some more heat shielding. This was applied all the way across, then the loose strands trimmed.

And everything out of the way, ready for the engine.

We got the throttle bodies installed:

And some more done on the interior.

The engine is now officially in!

Last weekend, we pulled the engine off the engine stand and set it onto some wood blocks, the idea being that we'd slide the floor jack under and wheel it away.

The jack was too wide, so we had to lift it once again, but no biggie, its pretty light. After it was on the jack, I guided it in as my dad lowered the car over it. I think it would have been quicker to go old-school and just use jack stands.

And voila, its in!

I connected up the sensors, injectors, and modified the wire harness in a couple spots as well. no photos of that yet.

A lots happened since I last updated, and since its late, I'll have to edit this later, but here are some more pics.

We had some of the interior work done at Ted Blake's, a local and very good 356 specialist. They also put in the windshield and rear window, as well as assembled the parking brake, and I'm sure a bunch of other stuff.

The engine also was assembled. sorry I didn't take any pics of the bits before assembly.

And as we made more parts, we were able to assemble more to the engine.

And this last pic shows my other project. Hopefully it will be ready for shakedown in a couple weeks.

Rennwish in Haiti....

In the off-chance I can update this while in...

In the off-chance I can update this while in Haiti, I'll try to post here as well...

Hi folks,

Really quickly as I'm trying to get a few things completed before I leave. The arrangements are to arrive in the DR - and then take a couple of options - I may have a flight into Cayes from a wonderful Pastor, if we can link up. The other option is drive to Cayes. If it's the latter, then I won't get there until late tomorrow night is my guess.. As well...

I spoke to Adrien earlier today. Les Cayes has had a few flights and some relief - but, the hospitals are still in dire need for basics and it is still has a very long way to go. While I'll be taking down a huge bag of supplies - my guess is that it will be like a "raindrop" hitting the ocean.... But - know for that - with you - if we can help only a few hundred with temporary supplies - it will be well worth it...

Food is still a critical item - and we have expanded our support there to include Pastor Andre's orphanage and facilities - Andre is another I can "call my brother", as his orphanage has been his life-long passion and dream. We are honored to be called to assist him with his dream - which is simply, as is our combined passion - is to do whatever we can to make a difference.

As well, in the villages, hospitals and other orphanages - refugees and "newly created" orphans from the disaster are still streaming in... While I'm there, we'll be discussing some options with Pastor Vilnor perhaps using the two stories of the school for temporary shelter/refuge for some of these children -until we can develop a better long-term plan.

So - in closing - simply - thank you - again. Not from me really - but rather - thank you from the hundreds and thousands who we hope to assist in some small way.

You have given them a voice - and more importantly - you have given them a little sliver of hope.

I'm personally honored to be your ambassador and your "face" to so many children, women and men in this program. So, my personal thanks for that privilege...

Working part time night at the local book store...

Working part time night at the local book store is interesting at least. I had always figured the customers going into a book store were of a higher standard or at least literate.

Some of the regular or best of the regular customer interactions:
-I'm looking for a book but I don't know the title or author, I know it's red and cost $19.95.

-I'm looking for a book for my sociology class, I don't know who wrote it or the title but it's yellow with a black dot and it's about sociology.

-I'm looking for a book on codependency. Can you take to those books yourself an don't just tell me where they are; I always get lost in these places.

-What do you mean I can't return this book, it's not that old, I just bought it last year and the cover doesn't look that bad.

-I'm looking for the book that was in that table over there about two months ago. No I know know anything else about it.

-I'm looking for a Linux book that compares [yada yada yada] with [something or other] and the relation to [something else way over my head]. Yes I know where the Linus books are but I need to have a book that will help me with this. Isn't there anyone here that knows this stuff?

-Where's the non-fiction books? [FYI 90% of the store is non-fiction. Only one corner of the second floor contains fiction books.]

Its been a while since I've posted an update, and while progress feels slow, there is still progress being made. Since the last update, a lot has happened. The tachometer, speedometer and axillary gauges were sent out to be rebuilt for conversion to electric and 12v, the speedo was just cleaned up. For less money, I think we could have gotten a 904 combo gauge and new tach. . . well we actually did get a new tach, but the old one was cleaned up while it was there.

Also, the car went to the upholstry shop to get the new dash, headliner and door panels installed. The seats were also redone, and because they weren't done right, they're back at the upholstry shop being re-redone, so I don't have any pictures of them.

Since the car got back home, we were able to install the rear side windows, and sound / thermal insulation on the firewall and rear seats.

Also, the engine is down with Walt at Competition Engineering getting machined. We'll do the final assembly here once he's done.

I also tried ordering the ECU last Friday, but the supplier can sometimes be difficult to get a hold of.

The fuel system was done, but after much deliberation, we are re-doing it, so that it will be a much safer setup (both for the occupants and for the engine)

Here are some quickee update pics of the interior.

A collection of random thoughts from the last...

A collection of random thoughts from the last couple months....

Jobs

I posted a while ago about taking a new job in technical sales. I started in October and after 6 months, I can honestly say it is probably the best decision I ever made. I am extremely happy with the job and have surprisingly found that success has come fairly easily at this point.

The peculiar thing about this 'sales' job is that i don't really sell anything. I work in more of a technical support role. I act as a manufacturer's rep for about 21 different semiconductor product suppliers. My day consists of either sitting down with, talking on the phone with, or e-mailing with engineers, suppliers, and application engineers to try and solve problems that people are having.

I actually like doing this much more than I liked working in motorsports. I don't have any of the problems that I did in racing, it is much more stable (so far), and I'm home every night.

Coaching

When I took the new job, it gave me the opportunity to get back into coaching. I didn't realize how much I missed it until I started again.

While I was in college, I coached for a local volleyball club as an assistant on the 18-1s team. The guy that I coached with was awesome. I learned so much from him and I think he is probably the reason that I like coaching as much as I do. My teams the two years that I coached there consisted primarily of middle class girls from mostly rural parts of west central Indiana. There was never really any drama with those teams. They showed up at practice, worked their asses off, and never complained. Granted, our teams were never very good due to the competition that we played, but they never complained.

I am now coaching for a club in Indianapolis; one of the top clubs in the Midwest. I am an assistant on the 18-2s. I am coaching with a guy that I played with in college. At the start of the season I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to work with this person. He and I never really got along when we were playing together, but got along ok when I was helping coach the college women's team and he was a manager. I accepted his offer to coach with him mainly because it would get my foot in the door at this club and figured that I could deal with coaching with him for a season... it's only 6 months right?

The season started out pretty rough for us, going 3-7 in our first two tournaments. The frustrating part was that they were showing flashes of brilliance, but just could not maintain that level of play for entire matches, let alone throughout a tournament. After the 2nd tournament of the year we sat down with each girl for a couple minutes to go over what we thought she was doing well, and where we thought she needed to improve both physically and mentally. Everything went well for the first couple weeks after that. We actually finished 3rd overall in our next tournament finishing the weekend 4-1.

It was after this tournament that I began getting frustrated with the head coach. I can be very laid back if the situation calls for it, but I'm not afraid of confrontation if it is needed. He on the other hand is completely inept in any kind of social situation. He doesn't know how to communicate with people and often makes things worse when he says things. He's very negative in any situation and does not give the girls much, if any, positive feedback. I have spent a lot of time reading sports psychology books and books written by coaches, all of which say you cannot act in that manner. A coach needs to be an effective communicator and has to be able handle any situation in a 'positive' manner. You can get on your players, but you have to praise them when they are playing well. He continually points the finger at a certain group of players and never notices when they do anything well. Due to his deficiencies, I have taken on the role of 'cheerleader.' I go out of my way to make sure I am giving the girls good feedback on how to improve and to make sure I notice when the do things well. The most frustrating part of it all is that he is completely unwilling to try and learn how to be a better communicator and/or coach. He doesn't believe he has a problem even though everyone is telling him he does!

I have decided that I really want the head coaching position on this team for next year. We could potentially bring back all of our really talented girls and will hopefully add talent in places that we are missing it right now. It totally made my day when the head coach said that he doesn't think he is going to coach this age group next year!!!! Hopefully that is my opportunity to step up and lead!

Family

This will be the last rant for this blog entry....

I am so frustrated with my family right now. When I graduated high school in 2002, I decided to go to school 8 hrs away from home. I wanted that opportunity to be out on my own and to be independent. I was in school for a total of 6 yrs (I took a lot of time off to play with racecars). In those 6 years my parents came out to drop me off as a freshman, to help me move back to school at the start of my 3rd year, to watch me walk in commencement after my 4th yr, and in May of last year for my sister to visit the University of Indianapolis and to be there when I worked my first Indy 500.... A total of 4 times in 6 yrs. If you ask them, the reason they never came out was because I always told them not to. They only ever asked to come out maybe 3 other times and it would have only been for a weekend. Call me crazy, but I didn't feel right having them to drive 16 hrs to spend a total of 2 days.

My sister is now a freshman at the University of Indianapolis. Since she started school in August, my parents have been out here 5 times, one more than they were in my 6 yrs of college. There are a couple reasons for this... First, my parents are going through empty nest syndrome, which I can understand. The second reason is that my sister is EXTREMELY selfish. She doesn't see a problem with asking my parents to drive 14 hrs to come to Indianapolis and see her. Am I the only one who sees the problem there?

I very rarely ask my parents for anything. There were a couple times in college where I had to ask them for money, but it was never over $300, and those times were few and far between. She asks them for EVERYTHING. When she turned 16 she got a 2003 Mini in 2006 because she wanted a 'nice car'... I got a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder, in 2000! They have paid ~$750 in furniture and accessories for her dorm room... I got a $10 used couch... The list goes on and on...

Since she has moved out here, she has taken on the mentality that somehow she is suddenly better than me, which seriously pisses me off. Everything has become a competition with her. She constantly has to bring up ways she thinks she's better than me and how grown up and independent she is... FALSE!!! It is to the point now that I am starting to not enjoy spending time with her because of all of this, which is pretty bad since her and I were getting along great before she came to college...

My Car Peed on the Floor

Having owned my C4 for about 3 yrs now I have had...

Having owned my C4 for about 3 yrs now I have had minimal issues. A/C being the most fixed item on my car.

Anyway, I noticed I was a little low on oil last Friday so I decided to top her up since I had been running around town most of the day and she was good and warm. She burns about 1/2 quart every 1k miles so it was time. I went through the normal oil add procedure, shut down the car and thought I smelled a bit of burning oil. A glance around revealed nothing so I figured I spilled a little during the fill.

The next morning being Saturday I thought I would go for an early morning drive to the local mountains. I fired her up and thought I would check around the car since I smelled burning oil the night before. DAMN - she peed oil on the ground, about 1/3 to 1/2 quart in the area of the oil tank. So much for the fun run.

I looked under the oil drain plug and noticed it was quite wet and oil caked. She has been oozing for sometime and I missed it. I could not see a location of the leak so I pulled off the shark fin and the thermostat was just covered in oil but I could not see a definitive location of a leak. In looking around I noticed the lower rocker appeared wet almost half way up. Oh no!! I pulled off the lower rocker, of course I broke 4 of the 6 clips, and the hard lines were dry.

I jacked up that side of the car, pulled off the rear tire and power washed the thermostat area clean put the tire back on and went for a drive to heat up the car. Upon return the leak had revealed itself. I have two oil lines leaking. The small line from the thermostat to the oil tank is leaking at the upper portion. Great thats a $20 hose. There is another line leaking though and it turns out its the line from the thermoststat to the oil filter console. Ok, thats gonna cost some $$. That line was wet from the thermostat all the way up into the wheel well.

Parts ordered and delivered and Ill tackle this weekend. She did need an oil change and Im converting to Brad Penn 20/50 during the hose change. Apparently, she had to pee oil on the ground to get the attention she wanted.

Parts list:
2 - Oil lines (almost $300 total)
2 - Crush washers
1 - Oil filter
1 - Case Brad Penn 20/50
12 - Rocker clips (now I have spares)

Ill report back on how it went when Im completed.

Here's my take on...

Wow. #2. Seems appropriate.

Here's my take on the transition to 2009. First of all, 2009 really seems like a suck-ass number, doesn't it? It's a freak. Even numbers seem so much friendlier. It's like that warning for viagra "if you experience an erction lasting more than 4 hours, call your doctor" so, like, if you experience an erection lasting more than 365 days, kiss ur ass goodbye!

I'm PUI. Google it, you'll see. I've been left with the new year's champaigne bottle. Everyone else is passed out. I am completely pblizted. sry- can't spell.

anywhoo, I have some commentary. 1st. Thanks Jon. U rock. I've been doing this sort of thing for nigh 20 years. Yes. 20 years. I've grown fond of the regulars in various forums. In particular, this place I have gronw fond of a few. Here's the list in ono particular order:

* food angel
* alexis
* the robs
* rskybiz
* dick beers = post whore
* streckfu
* andre
*angela
* others - can't remember

don't underestimate the power of this place (and other 'social' placeas). We are human. you feel it as I do. don't fight it.

hugz and kisses :)

Conclusion

Well, last week Adam G. came down and helped me...

Well, last week Adam G. came down and helped me put everything back together.
I ended up doing just the selector spring, the reverse lockout spring and the front seal (plus the mod to change the rear shift coupler from an allen-head set screw to a hex head screw.

The car runs and shifts perfectly, way better than it ever has.

I still have some other issues to deal with, but this one is solved. :cheers:

Here's a short story for you, one that explains...

Here's a short story for you, one that explains the last 5 years of my life.

Back in Kansas my brother and I would play Mechwarrior 3 damn near every night. He was a bit better than me and got invited to join a clan. A few weeks after his invite Mech 4 came out and we both bought it, and apparently so did the clan he met up with and in a few weeks of playing with them I got an invite also. As some know, the testing to get in a clan is intense. In this case it was my mech (heavy class) vs a Light, Med, Heavy. In order. Well I passed. I think this was back in 99 or '00. Whenever the game came out. In four years I was SaKahn (2nd in command)

We had a group of guys that would come and go, the high point of the clan (CHH-Clan Hells Horses) we had 45 guys, with a good 20 or so that were good friends. All different leagues, sometimes several at one time. Over the years the Clan leader (Khan) and I became great friends, enough so that back in 2003 he suggested we go in to business with each other so I moved to Texas and lived with him while we got a couple of UPS Stores up and running. At this time, we were gaming with the same crew, but the MechWarrior games puttered out, we tried the battlefield series most and had some good times. Those times came to an abrupt end about 1 year after I moved to Texas. The guy I came to know from gaming ended up being a psychizo freak, cheater, and a liar. The clan broke up.

Lost a bit of $$, a friendship, but I gained the best thing in the world, met my wife and her daughter. Bought a 928 after selling my boat and now have the best group of friends, most fun cars, and the family I had always hoped I would have. Oh, it's lead to a new career too.

So when people say you are wasting your time in the intranets playing games, I am where I am today, because I played game, damn near 5 times a week. I can not say I am sorry for wasting a bit of my time doing so.

Now yesterday is a funny day. Of all the people I've kept up with from the old CHH clan, a buddy from England called me to say he was coming back to the states for 2 weeks and would really like it if me and my wife would come to his wedding in Vegas next month. Tell me that that doesn't rock.

I think I'm going to add this post to a blog. :D
